What to do over Christmas break in Pittsburgh

Finals may have left you feeling like a bit of a Grinch, but during the holidays Pittsburgh is bustling with activities to make you jolly again. Whether you’re looking for an outing with friends and family or a romantic holiday date, the activities listed below have you covered. 

Phipps Conservatory Winter Flower Show 

Every year after Thanksgiving, Phipps transforms into a winter wonderland. Each year brings a different theme for the Conservatory. According to their website, this year’s theme is ‘Let it Glow!’ and it promises to be bigger and brighter than previous years. Show your Carlow ID to get into this attraction free of charge all season long. 

Downtown Christmas Displays 

As of Nov. 16, Downtown is lit up for its annual Light Up Night. This night marks the start of the season for Downtown holiday festivities, such as the Holiday Market in Market Square, gingerbread displays in the PPG Winter Garden, and the giant tree made of lights at Point State Park. 

Christmas Shows in Cultural District 

Tired of looking at all the bright lights? Head down to the Cultural District to catch a classic holiday show, such as The Nutcracker or A Christmas Carol. 

Mass Mutual Ice Rink at PPG Place 

PPG Ice Rink opens up on Light Up Night and remains open until the end of February. This outdoor ice rink boasts a large Christmas tree in the center making it the perfect spot for a cute, holiday photo op.  

Kennywood’s Holiday Lights 

Thousands of twinkling holiday lights adorn the park making it the perfect winter wonderland escape. The holiday lights begin after Thanksgiving and continue until the weekend after Christmas.
